Effective March 14, 2008 the new Spousal Catastrophic Disability Benefit Rider will be available on MetLife's Omni Advantage, Select, and Essential policies. Before now, there hasn't been a way to protect the economic value of a stay-at-home or part-time employed spouse. The Spousal Catastrophic Disability Benefit Rider provides a benefit in the event of a catastrophic disability of a non-working or part-time employed spouse.

Benefit Highlights
MetLife's Spousal Catastrophic Disability Benefit Rider pays the insured a monthly benefit when the insured's spouse, due to injury or sickness, has a medical condition that meets the criteria for a spousal catastrophic disability, as set forth below:

1. Complete, irrecoverable and irreparable loss of:

  • Use of both hands, or both feet, or one hand and one foot;
  • The sight in both eyes;
  • Speech; or
  • Hearing in both ears; or

2. Alzheimer's Disease or other irreversible form of senility or dementia requiring supervision to protect from threats to health and safety due to severe cognitive impairment, and is unable to perform at least two (2) of the Activities of Daily Living without assistance from another person; or

3. Aphasia; Hemiparesis; Paraplegia; or Quadriplegia, and is unable to perform at least two (2) of the Activities of Daily Living without assistance from another person.

Additional Provisions:

  • The spouse must either not be employed or employed part-time for less than 30 hours per week.
